Speaking at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the President Salome Zourabichvili also drew attention to media freedom in Georgia. According to her, today media organizations and social media enjoy complete freedom in Georgia. As for example, she talked about Rustavi 2.
“Today media organizations and social media enjoy complete freedom. Almost no organization has been fined or criticized by the public. The dispute over the ownership of the opposition channel Rustavi-2, which was heard in court, was presented as an attempt by the authorities to control or close the channel. At the same time, the opposite happened - during that period the tax authority refrained from collecting accumulated debt (GEL 23 million). The case was heard by both the Supreme Court of Georgia and the European Court of Human Rights. In July, 2019, the Strasbourg court ruled that no rights had been violated on Rustavi 2.
